Keeping your carpets clean can be a challenge, especially if you have a busy schedule or live in a home with kids or pets. Whether you’re hosting a party or simply want your home to feel extra fresh, here are our favorite, simple carpet cleaning tips to hold you over until you’re able to schedule a professional carpet cleaning appointment. Plus, these hacks are easy to execute with a few everyday ingredients you probably have on hand at home.

1. The Ice Cube Lifter

Rearranging furniture is a great way to give any room a new look and revitalized feel. Yet all too often you’ll notice heavy furniture has left deep imprints on your carpet that distract you from enjoying your space.

If you’ve tried to deal with these odd dents on your own, you’ve likely been stumped as to how you can get those small areas of your carpet back to their normal state after so much time under pressure.

Just put a regular ice cube on those annoying impressions and give it time to melt. Next, dab away the excess water with a cotton cloth. Then, place another towel down over the area and iron on top of it until the carpet fibers are nearly dry. This will leave them soft, pliable, and lifted up to their former state.

2. Nozzle Vacuum Shag Carpets

Shag carpets are in style again, but they’re just as tough to clean as ever. Although you may feel like this kind of carpet needs to be vacuumed extra frequently, vacuuming normally can cause shag fibers to become frizzy, loosen, and shed. This not only destroys the carpet but can also cause a mess in your home.

Fortunately, there’s a way to keep your shag carpet clean without having to deal with constant shedding. Instead of using your vacuum as usual, try using the hose attachment to get more detailed vacuuming of your shag carpet. The concentrated nozzle will clean deep into the roots of the carpet without stressing its weave, resulting in less shedding and frizz.

3. Baking Soda Refresher

Baking soda is known as a cure-all for many problems around the house, and your carpets are no exception. If you feel your rugs and carpets are beginning to smell a bit musty but you don’t have time for a deep clean, give baking soda a try.

Add a few drops of citrus essential oils to a 16-ounce box of baking soda and sprinkle this mixture on the carpet, allowing it to rest for five or ten minutes. Then, vacuum up the powder. You’ll be left with a carpet that both smells and looks fresh.

4. Oil Stain Solution

Baking soda doesn’t only boost freshness. It can also help alleviate the effects of otherwise disastrous oil stains. Should you ever spill oil on a carpet or rug, it’s important to act quickly to absorb it.

It’s important to remember, rubbing the spot will only cause the oil to spread and make the stain even larger. Instead, soak up excess oil with baking soda.

Apply a liberal amount of baking soda to the stained area and leave it until it is clear the powder has absorbed the oil, creating a crusty texture. Vacuum up this mixture to reveal a significantly lighter stain. Then, as soon as you get the chance, reach out to Chem-Dry to help get the rest of the stain out.

5. Squeegee Carpet Cleaning

As much as you may try to vacuum up all the pet hair in your house, it can stick to your carpets and upholstery with unexpected power. When vacuuming just doesn’t cut it, it’s time to reach for a squeegee.

While this tool is designed for glass window panes, it can also dislodge pet hair and other stubborn particles from carpets and fabrics. Try squeegeeing your couches and carpets as you would a window. You’ll be surprised at how much pet hair you are able to remove!

Although these carpet cleaning tricks can enhance the appearance of your carpets in the short term, nothing beats regular deep cleaning done by professionals. Call Clean Living Chem-Dry today at (415)897-5337 to schedule a visit from one of our local technicians!
